CMU has a responsibility to be a “good neighbor” to the Greater Pittsburgh Region. How do we exemplify this in our actions as a university? This panel aimed to untangle the nuance of universities’ tax-exempt status, examine how this status impacts our region, and explore potential future actions.
In an effort to build on discussions around the Tax-Exempt status of many institutions around the Pittsburgh region and the nation as a whole, CSP wanted to have an event to allow panelists from both sides of the conversation to express their views.
This hour long panel was moderated by PublicSource’s Emma Folts and co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Assembly of CMU.
We had the following panelists:
Lisa Frank, Chief Operating and Administrative Officer for the City of Pittsbugh
Dan Davis, Economic Justice Organizer for Pittsburgh United
Dr. Davarian Baldwin, Author of “In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower” and the Paul E. Raether distinguished Professor of American Studies at Trinity College
Dr. Illah Nourbakhsh, K&L Gates Professor of Ethics and Computational Technologies and Executive Director of the Center for Shared Prosperity
This event successfully educated many attendees from the Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University communities.
